Established in 2001, the Dot NAME universal top-level domain is the only one planned for personal web pages only. These domains can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are famous by. Initially, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to obtain john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought third-level domain names remained running.
